Like many women of her era, Vicki Hillen started playing golf later in life, but unlike many women, Vicki excelled at the game of golf. With the encouragement of her husband Dr. Phil Hillen, she became a fierce competitor with a beautiful golf swing, an ever radiant smile and a contagious personality. She never met a stranger and if you were fortunate enough to play with her, she made you feel as if you were out for a leisurely day of golf.
Vicki won one national and 12 South Carolina amateur golf championships over a period of just 10 years. In 2001, she won the National Club Championship for Women at the Legends Club, Nashville, TN. Her WSCGA Stroke Play Championship reign began in 1993 and then repeated in 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999. She was the Match Play Champion in 1996, 1999 and 2001. In 2002 and 2003 with her partner, she won the WSCGA Team Championship. In yet another team event, she was a winner with the SCGA/WSCGA Mixed Team Championship in 2001 and 2002.
Off the course, Vicki was a loving wife, a registered nurse, a board member of WSCGA, a board member of the Women's Carolinas Golf Association, Team Captain of the Carolinas-Virginias Team Matches, and represented South Carolina in the USGA State Team Competition.
Vicki Moore Hillen was posthumously inducted into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame in 2006.
It is appropriate that our South Carolina junior golfers will not only receive assistance from the Foundation that honors her, but will also come to realize that Vicki Hillen represented the very best example of an athlete and a young woman.
